VICTOR CHEN YEE FEI is an emerging filmmaker from Malaysia. He writes, directs and produces narrative and documentary films. He also serves as assistant director for film productions.
Becoming a cinephile after his parents first brought him to the cinema at the age of 7, and growing up within a diverse community have compelled him to tell stories through films. He has been making indie short films with other young filmmakers inspired by the Malaysian New Wave.
Victor Chen was the first runner-up of 'I Want to be a Filmmaker', a Hypp TV reality show competition. He is also the grand prize winner of Panasonic Digital Short Film Competition 2016 with his directorial debut short film 'My Ba’s Radio'. The short film recently won Best Short Film at Mantova Lovers Short Film Festival 2019 in Italy. 'My Ba's Radio' was also selected to participate in Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2017 at Tokyo, Japan, Asian World Film Festival 2017 at Los Angeles, USA and as the sole representative from Malaysia at One Country One Film International Festival 2018 at Issoire, France.
He has also been actively involved in crisis relief efforts and documentary projects which have brought him to indigenous villages deep in the Malaysian rainforests, trails of mountain guides on top of Mount Kinabalu and Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon. Being a stage actor, he was involved in ‘Homecoming’ a fundraising theatre for the typhoon relief in the Philippines and ‘Project Spect-Actor’, a theatre of the oppressed movement with forum theatre for Malaysian youths.
Victor Chen also attended Busan International Film Festival 2018 under Platform BUSAN. Some of his previous affiliations include Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios, Imagica SEA and Netflix’s original series ‘Marco Polo’. And he is currently working closely with established filmmakers, Yasu and Bea Tanaka from 42nd Pictures on their feature film, ‘Terbalik’ which screenplay has already garnered the acquisition of adaptation rights from Ivanhoe Pictures for audiences in 34 countries including the United States, South Korea, China, Spain and France.

Trivia: 'My Ba's Radio' was written based on the director's late father and it was filmed at the 60-year-old house of the director's grandfather in the small town, Semenyih in Selangor, Malaysia. The script was written two years prior to production, and the film was shot in one day, 5th November 2016, coincidentally, the birthday of the director's late father.
'My Ba's Radio' was produced within Panasonic Digital Short Film Competition 2016, and made possible with generous support from filmmakers and mentors, Yasu and Bea Tanaka, the entire cast and crew and Panasonic Malaysia.
